Sugar Free Sunday

I have no additional news, but I wanted to share the first "FUN" idea I had for those near and far.  It may not be fun to anyone else, but I'll share it anyway because when I couldn't sleep Wednesday night, this was actually one of the things that came to mind while I was not sleeping and contemplating what in the world I would blog about (after I decided that too).

I've read and also heard and extended report on a radio talk show about how bad sugar is for our bodies, yeah yeah, everyone's heard that, but everything in moderation, right?  So sometimes we (I) am a little less moderate than others.  But this information was different.

The radio show that sticks in my head the most is a nutrition guy who was not hawking some snake oil to make you skinny, make your hair shiny, increase your love life, or solve all the problems in your life.  He took the perspective that if he ever found himself in the position of having cancer, that he would do this handful of things.

Top of his list was to stop eating all sugar, because cancer cells thrive and grow faster on sugar.  He also included fruits in this list too, because fructose is also one that feeds the cancer too.

Well I'd personally like to stop contributing to the delinquency of the minor in my body so I've decided to temporarily stop eating sugar, including fruits.

Shane told me about this article yesterday and the adverse affects of sugar.

Before you think oh that shouldn't be too hard, I should confess that I LOVE COOKIES.  I was at a church women's conference a few years back and I nearly pushed a woman out of the way to get to the last M&M cookie.  Thankfully, I managed to stop myself, because how embarrassing would that be???

And to keep it real and super honest here is a picture of the cookies I have stashed in my freezer right now.

Yep, leftover Christmas cookies, Valentine cookies, cookie dough, brownies, and chocolate chip cookies. This is not going to be super easy for me.

So here comes the fun part.  Will you spend Sunday and give up obvious sugar (cookies, ice cream, cake, cokes, candy) with me?  If you find yourself about to reach for the donut hole, or whole donut on Sunday morning at church, instead decide to do something else; say a prayer from my prayer list this week.  If you find yourself already nibbling, no need to spit it out, you can still say the prayer.  :)

Janet is seriously considering and Sandy is taking a stand in solidarity with me and also going obvious sugar free for the duration, though J says it might be easier to just shave her head.  We are all thinking it will be like a long Lenten season.  We three have regularly given up sweets for Lent, so we do know it can be done.

Anyway, if you'd like to join the one day of fun, or tell us we're crazy, you can leave a comment and let me know.

Feel free to post comments anonymously.  You shouldn't need to sign in.

Prayer requests for this week:
  • That God is glorified in this journey.
  • Being cancer free is also very high on my list.
  • Prayers for the boys (and Janet) as we all process this info
  • Focus at work (we’re kicking off a big new project this week).

  1. Sissy,
It should be easy for me since I don't crave sweets. I'll focus more on the prayers : ) Perhaps I should give up gravy on Sundays instead?
    Love, Sissy

  2. This is a fantastic step in the right direction, as hard as it may be to actually do. The further away from sugar and processed foods you can get during this time, the better. Don't want to feed those cancer cells with sugar and chemicals. :) I'll be praying for you and joining you in your sugar free Sundays (and hopefully most other days - I'm trying to kick the sugar too).

  3. I'm in! It's a small thing, just one day a week. And if it helps you stick with something that might help, that's a good enough reason. :)
